Over the weekend, Joe Bates, co-founder and creative director of London-based knitwear label Sibling, passed away following a long battle with cancer. His age was unknown. While his passing was first reported by Love magazine via Instagram, the brand took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to confirm the news.

Born in Leicester, England, Bates launched Sibling with Cozette McCreery and Sid Bryan in May 2008. He was last credited with co-designing the label’s spring 2016 menswear collection, which debuted in London this past June. (Though LinkedIn lists him as the creative director only up until March 2013.) Bates also served as the head of design at Jaeger for nearly three years, from January 2010 to November 2012.

Throughout Bates’s tenure, both Sibling and its playful and vibrant womenswear offshoot, Sister by Sibling, received numerous awards, including the esteemed Woolmark Prize in Europe in June 2013. Known for its cartoonish coloring and cheeky prints, both Sibling and Sister by Sibling have become known for their pairing of classic English silhouettes with a brighter, more light-hearted spirit.

According to Love, the brand will continue to operate. A rep for Sibling could not be reached for comment.
